Veteran music promoters Noel Mifsud and Michael Bugeja have announced the upcoming launch of Melodija60, a weekly radio show dedicated entirely to contemporary music by Maltese bands and artists. Supported by the Arts Council Malta funding scheme for music on private radio stations, the show will air at 7pm CET every Tuesday on the DAB+ digital radio station Maltin Biss as from 6th October 2026, with repeats later in the week.

The concept behind Melodija60 is simple yet impactful: one hour, once a week, dedicated exclusively to the diverse sounds of the Maltese islands. The show’s name reflects its core mission and structure—drawing from Melodija, the online music media platform that has documented and supported the local music scene for years, and 60, representing the sixty-minute duration of each episode.

Melodija60 will focus strictly on fresh, contemporary material released in recent years. In a strong commitment to local identity, at least 50% of the music broadcast will be in the Maltese language, spotlighting the exciting and profound work currently driving the local scene.

Unlike mainstream commercial radio playlists that often focus strictly on mass-market hits, Melodija60 aims to bridge the gap by exploring all genres. The weekly playlist will feature everything from electronic producers delivering international-level tracks to jazz groups, metal and rock bands, hip-hop artists, folk musicians, and singer-songwriters.

"The music being created locally today is extraordinary in its richness, but commercial radio naturally has a blind spot for anything that doesn't fit a mainstream playlist," said co-host Michael Bugeja. Noel Mifsud added that "Melodija60 is designed to step into that space, treating local music with the undivided attention, respect, and visibility it truly deserves."

Co-hosts Michael Bugeja and Noel Mifsud bring over 30 years of collective experience in promoting, supporting and participating in the Maltese music scene. Having witnessed local artists grow from small gigs to international recognition, the duo enjoys deep trust within the musical community and boasts extensive libraries of local music across all genres.

With the backing of Arts Council Malta and the broadcasting platform provided by Maltin Biss, the ultimate goal is to establish Melodija60 as a permanent, professional staple of the Maltese airwaves—a go-to destination for listeners wanting to stay updated and a trusted platform for local creators.
